[National Gallery Singapore] Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow

I finally made my way to the National Gallery Singapore to visit the special exhibition on the artworks of Japanese Avant Garde Artist, Yayoi Kusama. The event was titled :- 'Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow.'

Yayoi Kusama is considered as one of the greatest artists of the late 20th and early 21st century. Her artwork is bizarre, trippy and of course Instagram worthy. Yayoi Kusama's artworks revolve around her iconic polka dots, infinity rooms and pumpkin motif!

I know I am probably one of the last few people to have visited this exhibition. Most of my friends have already been posting on Instagram with pictures of themselves with the Polka Dots! I've kept asking Baby to bring me there, but the long waiting queues kept putting our ideas of visiting the place down!

I was delighted to receive a pair of tickets from DBS Bank which allowed us to access all galleries, including Yayoi Kusama's exhibition! We decided to visit the exhibition at a later date, in the hopes that we could beat the crowds, but unfortunately, on the day we decided to visit, there were still throngs of people! Queuing was mandatory, but thanks to the tickets from DBS Bank, we were given priority access and could minimise on waiting!

We were very excited to enter Yayoi Kusama's world of mirrors!

Infinity Mirrored Room - Gleaming Lights of the Souls

First created in 1965, Kusama's infinity mirrored rooms transform her dot paintings into an immersive sensory experience.

We were only given 20 seconds to enter the room, due to the popularity of it. The queue was horrendous!

The Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended Into The Heavens

I love this creation very much as it created the illusion of a vast expanse of pumpkins within the confines of a cube!

Through her artwork, I could tell that Yayoi is a fantastic artist, albeit troubled. It seems that she had a troubled childhood, and sees life differently. Thankfully, art has helped her to cope with her disorders and hallucinations!

There were small peep boxes which showed an myriad of colours and patterns, infinitely repeating and expanding into a void. It's hard to describe in words, but undoubtedly, it would leave one mesmerized!

Life is the Heart of a Rainbow

This room is surrounded by Yayoi Kusama's epic painting series, My Eternal Soul in 2009.

With All My Love For the Tulips, I Pray Forever

This was her first room installation in 1963, and I love the colorful Polka dots. What makes Yayoi Kusama different from other artists is that her art originates from hallucinations that only she can see!

Narcissus Garden

This art piece was an installation of a mirrored sphere, and it is named after the youth of the same name in Greek Mythology. Narcissus was so handsome that he fell in love with his own reflection while bathing at a river.

Children's Biennale - Obliteration Room

We also visited the Obliteration Room at Children's Biennale which was collaborated between Yayoi Kusama and the Queensland Art Gallery. Visitors were invited to paste colorful stickers everywhere in the white room and now it has been transformed to a room full of polka dots.

In this room, there were many photo-worthy corners/areas for OOTD opportunities.

We took several random OOTDs!

I loved this exhibit, the 'Firewalk: A Bridge of Embers' which was part of the Children's Biennale exhibition. It was a fascinating installation which was created by means of an optical illusion, that gives one the impression as if they are walking in mid-air over a infinite void!

'I would go everywhere with you, even into the unknown!' Quoted by Hubsch Jess Baby.

Thanks National Gallery Singapore for showcasing Yayoi Kusama's creations as she is one of the world's most influential artists and her art has captivated millions all over the world!

Although Yayoi's exhibition ended on the 3rd of Sept 2017, the Children's Biennale exhibition is still on-going till the 08th of October 2017! It's free admission, so set a date soon to visit the Children's Biennale!
