[The Peranakan] Authentic Straits Chinese Cuisine

The Peranakan is an authentic Nonya/Straits Chinese cuisine restaurant in Singapore, and they are located at Orchard Road at the Claymore Connect, opposite The Forum! This place attracts many patrons who enjoy and love classic/nostalgic Peranakan dishes!

I grew up eating my grandma's and aunties' Peranakan dishes, and from time to time I do crave having these very unique dishes. Most of the Peranakan favorites are available here, such as Kueh Pie Ti, Ngoh Hiang, Nasi Ulam, Ayam Pong Teh, Nonya Chap Chye and many more.

The restaurant is easily spotted from a distance due to its floral wallpaper, huge chandeliers and Peranakan styled ceramics that are used. The interior décor is so elaborate!

Lead by Executive Chef Raymond Khoo and his team whom have served 3 generations of Peranakan recipes, they offers authentic Peranakan fare made from quality ingredients without the use of MSG at all.

Every corner of the restaurant was so colorful and insta-worthy. As per Mr Ken, the PIC who was our host for the day, explained that the restaurant was recently used by a couple as their wedding venue. The photo below shown was utilised for the tea ceremony!

While waiting for the food to be served, we were given an individual portion of crispy prawn roll.

We ordered KumKuat (SGD6.50) and Lime Juice with Biji Selaseh (SGD6.50) to quench our thirst!

Interestingly, the set meals are named after some of Singapore's founding fathers. Take the grand 'Tok Panjang Set: Wee Kim Wee (WKW)' set as an example. At SGD130++, a huge platter of assorted dishes are provided to fill any stomach! The Javanese words of 'Tok' means table, and 'Panjang' means long! Hence 'Tok Panjang' literally means long table, and it infers to a long wide spread of dishes across a long table that is normally seen at traditional Peranakan households during special occasions!

The Tok Panjang Set includes tasty traditional Peranakan soups such as 'Itek Tim' and 'Sup Bakwan Kepiting'. The former is a soup made of duck and salted vegetables, and the latter is soup with crab and pork meatballs! I preferred the Sup Bakwan Kepiting as it was light and very tasty, and each meatball was packed with goodness and had a real bite to it. It was a homely yet comforting dish!

If you prefer a smaller set, you can opt for ‘Tok Panjang Set: Lee Kuan Yew (LKY)’ - SGD90++. While each set is to be served strictly for 2 persons. I felt the portions given were suitable for 3!

The Tok Panjang Set comes with a Chef's Dessert Platter which consisted of yummy sweet Nonya treats, such as Pulot Enti Durian, Pulot Enti Kelapa and pancakes. The texture of the purée is creamy with a hint of bitterness. I love the combination of the durian and glutinous rice which went surprisingly well!

The Pulot Enti Kelapa was lovely too, with a rich topping of shredded coconut. The glutinous rice is stained blue by using 'Bunga Telang', which are butterfly-pea flowers.

We rounded up the Tok Panjang set with a choice of coffee or tea. We opted for tea, and were served a pot of fragrant Malacca Milk Tea which was soothing. It is definitely a must-try in my recommendation list!

If you prefer high tea to a savory feast, you can go for The Peranakan High Tea Set. Their high tea set is available daily from 11am-5.30pm and it cost SGD48++ per set on weekdays and SGD56++ on weekends. Each set comes with 2 bowls of yummy Mee Siam and is good for sharing for person.

The Peranakan High Tea Set features a good mix of savory and sweet treats. There were some repeat dishes in The Peranakan High Tea Set when comparing to the Tok Panjang Set. I love the Kueh Pie Ti and Satay Babi Kong Bak Pau. The Hae Bee Hiam Toast is simple yet really delicious and additive!

The Durian Puree with Thick Toast tasted divine, how can any durian lover resist Mao Shan Wang durians!

It is certainly worth a visit if you are looking for, or craving for Peranakan Cuisine! The Peranakan scores a high point on its unique dining experience. Thanks so much for having us, and we enjoyed our tasting very much. We took a group photo against the beautiful floral wall before leaving the eatery place.
